Characteristics:

Pop music gives a lot of importance to the voice. Melodies are clear and soft, and made to be liked. The rythm is catchy and usually fast. The lyrics are focused on the feelings of the singer.

Instruments

The voice is the main source of the melody in pop music, but guitars and keyboards, as well as drum sets accompain the singer very often. In modern pop, synthesizers are used to créate the background sound.

History and styles

Pop came from a mix of rock and roll, popular music, folk music and "rythm and blues".
Many subgenres came from pop, here are a few examples:
-Electro pop: the kind of pop that uses the synthesizer, it started in the 1980s'
-Indie pop: a softer kind of pop. Some influences to this style come from groups like the Beach Boys.
-Pop rock: a mix of the soft melodies and lyrics of pop with the strong rythm of rock.
